How to read drum notation

On a drum stave the lines stop meaning high and low, and start meaning which drum. Once that one idea lands, the rest takes about ten minutes.

That is one bar of the most common groove in popular music, written the way a published chart would write it. Everything below explains a piece of it.

The stave is a map of your kit

A drum part uses the same five-line stave as any other instrument, but each line and space is assigned to a piece of the kit instead of a pitch. Reading from the floor upwards:

There is no single binding layout — publishers differ slightly, particularly about which line a given tom sits on. That is why a good chart prints a key at the start, showing what each position means. If you meet a chart without one, snare in the middle and kick at the bottom are safe assumptions.

Round heads and crosses

The shape of the notehead tells you what kind of thing is being struck:

Stems up, stems down

This trips up most people first, and it is the simplest idea on the page: stems pointing up are your hands, stems pointing down are your feet.

Hands and feet play together constantly, so writing them as two voices lets a kick and a hi-hat share a beat without the bar turning into a pile-up. Look back at the example: on beats 2 and 4 the snare and the hi-hat share a single up-stem, because one hand plays each — while the kick hangs below on its own stem, because that is your foot.

Counting: beams tell you the subdivision

Rhythm behaves exactly as in any other notation, so if you have read music for another instrument, nothing new happens here.

Beaming matters more than it looks. Notes are grouped so each beat stays visually separate, which is why a bar of straight sixteenths appears as four tidy clumps rather than one long comb. Once you see the clumps you stop reading note by note and start reading a beat at a time.

Repeats, and why bar numbers jump

Drumming is built on repetition, and nobody writes the same bar nineteen times. Two shorthands do the work:

A chart that folds its repeats is not cutting corners. It is showing you the shape of the song — where the verse sits, where the chorus returns, which single bar is the fill — on one screen instead of eight pages.

If notation is not your thing yet

Plenty of good drummers never learned to read, and a grid works just as well for learning a part. One row per drum, one column per sixteenth, a mark where you hit. It carries less information than notation — nothing about note length or dynamics — but for a groove that is rarely what you were missing.
